Definition

Potable is water that is safe to drink for humans, has to have sufficiently low level of dissolved salts and have no microbes. It is not necessarily pure.

Making Potable Water

Aquifers (Ground Water Sources)

  • Usually safe to drink once treated with chlorine unless it is polluted by fertilisers - needs to be tested carefully

Freshwater

  • Freshwater is collected from lakes rivers and reservoirs.
  • Pass through filter beads to remove suspended particle (which comes from rainwater).
  • Use chlorine to sterilise water (ozone or UV light is used in other countries).

Salt Water

Some countries do not have an abundance of fresh water supplies so the must use salt water and carry out desalination which can be done be distillation or reverse osmosis these processes require lots o energy and are therefore expensive.
