Menstrual Cycle
- FSH causes maturation of an egg in the ovary within a structure called a follicle.
- Produced in Pituitary Gland.
- Stimulates ovaries to produces oestrogen.
- Oestrogen causes the lining of the uterus to grow again.
- Produced in Ovaries.
- Stimulates production of LH and inhibits (stops)further production of FSH.

- Its release causes ovulation - release of the egg.
- Progesterone
- Produced in Ovaries.
- Maintains lining of uterus and supports a pregnancy if the egg is fertilised.
- Inhibits release of LH and FSH.
Contraception
- Contraceptive pill.
- Pill contains progesterone or progesterone and oestrogen.
- Oestrogen inhibits FHS preventing maturation of an egg.
- Lining stops developing.

Use of Hormones to Treat Infertility
- Fertility drugs.
- Main hormones are FSH and LH which stimulate maturation and release of the egg.
- The woman can then become pregnant normally.
- IVF.
- Mother is given FSH and LH to encourage the maturation of an egg.
- The egg is extracted and fertilised in a lab.
- The fertilised eggs develop and then are inserted into the uterus.
- Low success rate, Physically stressful, Expensive.
