Reaction
Passed over iron catalyst at
Yield Increase
To increase yield the ammonia is cooled into a liquid and removed. The unreacted nitrogen and hydrogen are recycled back over the catalyst.
- Temperature -
is a compromise as higher temperatures shift the equilibrium to the left as the forward reaction is exothermic but we need a high temperature for a fast rate of reaction. is an optimal compromise. - Iron catalyst - increase rate of reaction. No effect on equilibrium position
- Pressure - high pressure pushes equilibrium to right as there is less molecules so pressure is less so system moves there to counteract. High pressures can be expensive and dangerous so
is a good compromise.
