Definition
Homeostasis is the regulation of the internal conditions of a Cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for function in response to internal or external changes
Automatic Control System
Homeostasis mainly happens through Automatic Control Systems. These consist of Receptor Cells, Co-Ordination Centre and an Effector.
- First the receptor cells detect a stimulus
- The receptor cells pass information to the co-ordination centre
- The co-ordination centre processes this information
- The co-ordination centre then sends out a signal to an effector
- The effector carries out a response to return/get closer to optimum conditions
